“I have always
enjoyed art and making things. I love drawing and painting, but also work in
collage, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, and other 3-D things like papier-mâché, and
recently in polymer clays. I sometimes combine these ways of working in
mixed-media pieces which I enjoy. I work from life wherever possible, often
from things I’ve collected. I also take photographs, and work from memory, and
imaginatively, sometimes allowing the materials and the work itself suggest
what might come next. Where I work now I have no room for a kiln, and I
missed working in clay. I had time when I stopped teaching to experiment with some polymer
clay I’d been given as a present. Having had dolls houses since childhood, I started by making tiny food
and ornaments, and just got hooked! I began making twelfth-scale figures in 2003. I really love making
these, and although they’re extremely fiddly and time-consuming, they
seem to combine a lot of skills I
enjoy. There’s a point where the character you’re doing seems to come to
life, and it’s just magical.” Eileen Sedgwick
