Elizabeth was Queen of
England for nearly 45 years, 1533-1603, the last of the Tudor monarchs. My twelfth-scale figure was
inspired by the Ditchley Portrait painted c1592 by Marcus
Gheeraerts the Younger. Single standing figure, wearing a white dress of hand-embellished fabric, decorated with lace and netting. Her hair is auburn mohair, and she has a tiara of old faux
pearls and several strings of pearl beads. Pearls symbolise purity which is
one of the reasons Elizabeth wore them. She carries a fan and gloves as in the original portrait, and I have
created a container for her based on the painting with the background of
stormy and sunny skies, with the map of England beneath her feet. The outside of the container has images of Elizabethan black-work
embroidery. She could be displayed in this as a “frame” or easily taken out if required. |
